Background of Company Rule: Company rule since 1757; gradual loss of autonomy through Regulating Act 1773, Pitt’s India Act 1784, Charter Acts 1793/1813/1833/1853. increasing Parliamentary control_> Company became administrative body after 1833. Nature of 1857 Revolt: first pan-Indian anti-colonial uprising, not merely Sepoy Mutiny_> watershed moment; exposed Company rule_> rise of national consciousness; end of Company → British Raj 1858. Early mutinies_> Vellore 1806, Barrackpore 1824, Ferozepur 1842. Tribal/peasant revolts: Santhal, Kol, Munda. Immediate cause_> Enfield rifle, greased cartridges; Mangal Pandey; Meerut outbreak. Causes_> economic, social-religious, political, military. Spread: soldiers, peasants, elites. Failure: weak unity; Crown rule 1858.
